New York, NY -- President Obama has been losing cabinet appointees like a ROWG loses hair, and today’s departure proved no exception to the trend. Senator Judd Gregg, (R) of New Hampshire, withdrew his nomination for Commerce Secretary.
Boo-effing-hoo…although the Senator gave some obtuse reasons for his withdrawal, LWOH has had the 411 on this ill-chosen, disastrous appointee-pick from the get-go:
- Gregg won more than $850,000 in 2005 after buying $20 worth of Powerball tickets at a D.C. convenience store.
- He is a member of the Sons of the American Revolution.
- The libertarian Cato Institute classifies Gregg as a "Free Trader," voting against trade barriers and trade subsidies 81% and 86% of the time, respectively.
So what was his excuse for withdrawing? Gregg cited "irresolvable conflicts" between himself and the Obama administration, making it the second time within the past month that the Commerce Secretary position has been vacant. Gregg was appointed to the position after Gov. Bill Richardson (D) of New Mexico withdrew because of a federal investigation into state contracts hanky-panky.
“It has become apparent during this process that this will not work for me as I have found that on issues such as the stimulus package and the Census, there are irresolvable conflicts for me,” Mr. Gregg said in a statement. “Prior to accepting this post, we had discussed these and other potential differences, but unfortunately we did not adequately focus on these concerns. We are functioning from a different set of views on many critical items of policy.”
Ok. Republicans are huddling against the stimulus package so we get this much -- but “the Census”? What does Gregg mean here?
Actually, the Department of Commerce itself should be replaced by a Department of Consciousness, anyway.
